Our History

  • Feeling lucky?
  • We make your experience our top priority.

For almost 40 years, Boomtown Casino has been a special part of Fort McMurray. Boomtown’s story began in 1978 with only eight portable blackjack tables and a money wheel. At the time, it had no permanent location, meaning casino events would rotate between various locations in the area.

From those humble beginnings, it now boasts over 23,500 square feet of gaming and entertainment space and offers all guests a friendly, fun, and enjoyable day or evening out.

The casino has had a permanent location since 1990. It was bought by Winners Gaming in 1992 and was established in the MacKenzie Park Inn (now the Quality Hotel and Conference Centre) for two years. In 2000, it moved to its current location near the Peter Pond Shopping Centre at 9825 Hardin Street.

It expanded in March 2006, and now offers greater capacity in the poker room, dance floor, and lounge, as well as increased restaurant seating.

ln June of 2003, Boomtown Casino became a public company. It is now owned and operated by Gamehost Inc., an Alberta-based company that is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) under (GH) and that also owns and operates the Great Northern Casino and the Service Plus Inns & Suites in Grand Prairie Alberta. Gamehost also owns the Deerfoot lnn & Casino, one of the premier entertainment complexes in southeast Calgary.

Throughout its history, the casino has maintained its commitment to community groups. With only 15 to 20 service clubs holding casino nights back in 1978, events were held on occasional weekends. Today, Boomtown Casino supports over 250 groups, and brings in volunteers to operate two-day casino nights and raise money for their good work.
